The arch former is constructed using thin lathe. The pieces are woven together from front to back and side to side to form an organic shape which guides the flames and ash through the kiln. This woven structure is then reinforced by stonger lateral supports, making it strong enough to support the bricks. This kiln is slightly unusual in that it does not have a stepped packing space but, relies on the angle from the top of the chimney to the bottom of the firebox to generate the draught. This design creates more packing space at the back of the kiln which is beneficial given the restricted kiln site.
